William Harper was born in Indiana around 1834. In 1861, he was living in Nottingham, Wells County, Indiana, when he enlisted in Company A of the 47th Indiana Regiment. Harper was mustered out of the regiment as a sergeant on 23 October 1865. In 1880, he and his wife, Lidia, were living in Indianapolis where he was working as a cooper.
